Camryn Rogers, the collegiate and Canadian record holder along with the No. 9 all-time competitor in the women's hammer throw at 254-10 (77.67m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her return to Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., to participate July 15 in the World Championships after winning her third NCAA Division 1 title for Cal at the venue June 9 to ascend to No. 4 in the world this year. Rogers, 23, who captured the World Under-20 gold medal in 2018 in Finland, shares her excitement for the opportunity to compete inside the stadium at Hayward Field for the first time after winning Pac-12 and NCAA titles in the hammer cage outside the facility. She analyzes how meaningful it is to compete at a global championship meet at such a familiar venue, especially with fellow Canadian Rowan Hamilton producing the top overall men's collegiate hammer throw mark this year with his 249-3 (75.98m) performance May 6 representing University of British Columbia at Oregon Twilight. Rogers reflects on a fifth-place effort in her Olympic debut last year in Tokyo and the experience of competing in front of a minimal crowd as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, and her appreciation for the chance to throw in front of a larger audience in the July 17 final in Oregon. She reflects on her return home June 25 for the Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships and being able to compete in front of family and friends for the first time since 2019, as well as the opportunity to throw close to home for the first time since her high school career in 2018. Rogers examines her development and improvement under Cal throws coach Mohamad Saatara, and credits her consistency and durability in the event to his training program. She also speaks about the benefit of having teammates Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania, Anna Purchase of England and American Amelia Flynt all training this summer for global competitions with coach Saatara. Rogers explains how significant it would be for herself or shot putter Sarah Mitton to secure the first World Championships medal for any female thrower in Canadian history, and shares how much she has been motivated by competing against the top American and Polish throwers. She also looks forward to the Bowerman Awards ceremony in December in Colorado and speaks about how inspiring it is to have all six finalists, including Anna Hall of Florida and Abby Steiner from Kentucky representing the United States, competing at the World Championships.
